So the very first book that I would suggest y’ll lay your well-manicured hands on is “Lessons in Chemistry – by Bonnie Garmus”.
A dear friend of mine suggested this book. Frankly speaking, I think she got sick of me constantly bragging about the latest history book that I was reading, wherein her usual input to my monologues was a polite “Really?”.
In hindsight, I feel she wanted to save herself from the moments I’d approach her with an excited sparkle in my eyes and those magical three words, “Do you know…?”—which, without fail, would instantly put her to sleep.
Anyway, back to Lessons in Chemistry…This novel, set in the 1960s follows the life’s tribulations of Elizabeth Zott, a female chemist who trailblazes through various hurdles faced by women of that era, refusing to bow down and give up on her passion for Chemistry. It shows her grit and determination as she is thrown into an unfamiliar world of Live Television.
Don’t let the words “Chemistry” and “1960” bore you away. Bonnie Garmus’ writing style blends wit, humour and emotional depth in a refreshing concoction captivating the readers from the very first page.
Oh and there is an Apple TV series based on this book going by the same name. Though I would strongly suggest not giving in to those “short-cut” instincts and reading the book first as I feel it is much brilliantly written and understood than depicted on the screen.
Go ahead and pick it up…(NOT THE PHONES!)
You’ll love it! (Just as my friend foretold)
Until six – thirty…
