‘The God Of The Woods’ is a riveting thriller set in the 1900s that deals with the mystery of inexplicable disappearances. The story is about the affluent Van Laars family, who run a popular summer camp. It explores each member of the household and other key characters through the lens of three different timelines (1950s, 1960s, 1970s), each of which is shrouded in mysteries and hidden truths.
The unfolding of the characters across these timelines and the oscillating relationship that they hold with one another have been beautifully and intricately depicted by the author. Initially, I struggled to grasp the interplay of the principal cast with the timelines, however, after a few chapters it got significantly easier.
What I loved the most (apart from this style of writing) was the emotional depth and caginess of the central figures that kept me on tenterhooks right through the end. Going back and forth in time added that extra layer of intrigue!
